Data and methodology

Release 2026-10-15.1 contains 19,486 unique PIN codes, 1,65,490 post offices, 754 districts and 36 states and union territories.

A PIN code is a six-digit postal identifier. Several post offices can share one PIN. State and district counts are calculated from the included records; they are not estimates of national totals. Office type charts count post offices, while delivery charts count PIN records.

PIN-level status represents the principal office. Individual post offices under a PIN can have different delivery statuses. A non-delivery office can still provide postal services.

Maps are orientation aids. Location diagrams show selected locations and do not represent postal or administrative boundaries. No distances or population estimates are inferred.

The postal directory is sourced from India Post's official dataset on data.gov.in. The dataset contains records for all active post offices in India, including PIN codes, office names, types, delivery status, and administrative hierarchy.
